She saved children from the war, now she is fighting for her own life
Some people never seek attention. They do the right thing because someone needs them. They save lives. They protect children. They keep going, even when it is life-threatening.

One of them is Yulia from the Ukrainian National Police. It was Yulia who, together with her colleagues, helped Støt Ukraine bring humanitarian aid from Denmark all the way to the children in the hardest-hit areas of the Kharkiv region.
She handed out toys, clothing and other necessities to children living close to the front line. She took part in evacuating families from areas under constant shelling and did everything she could to save those who could not get away on their own.
Yulia’s own story says a lot about her courage
When her home town was occupied by Russian forces, she managed to flee together with her little son. Shortly after, she returned to her service in the police. Even during her pregnancy she continued documenting war crimes, helping civilians and rescuing children from the most exposed areas.
Every single day she chose to put other people’s lives before her own.
Last night the war struck her too. During an evacuation of children and civilians, the vehicle that Yulia and her colleague Roman were driving in was hit by a Russian guided aerial bomb.
Roman lost his life on the spot. Yulia was critically wounded and is now in intensive care at a military hospital. The doctors are fighting for her life after several major operations.
For Støt Ukraine, this is not just another tragic piece of news from the war. Yulia has long been an invaluable part of our humanitarian work. Thanks to her courage, commitment and tireless efforts, the help made possible by our donors in Denmark has reached children and families living in the middle of the horrors of war.
We came to know Yulia as a person with an unusually big heart, someone who always put others before herself. That is why this tragedy hits us so deeply.
We pray for Yulia. With all our hearts we hope she survives, recovers and gets the chance to return to her family, her children and the life she has devoted to protecting others.
We also want to remember Roman with the greatest respect and gratitude. He gave his life while saving others.
Every single day the war demands new victims. This time it has struck people who were very close to Støt Ukraine. All of Støt Ukraine sends our warmest thoughts to Yulia, her family, her colleagues and everyone who is fighting for her life at this moment.

Yuliia Honcharenko
